so i gather you are not setting out to make money (this is a good thing! the whole #letsmakemoney has ruined the world...but anyway) but at some stage if it takes off you would need to recoup server/hosting and maintenance costs.

am i right? if not,can you let me know coz if it is going to be more commercial i would suggest some additional things.

i wasnt sure if you wanted to discuss funding in public ...if your cool with it, ill put any other questions under the topic

cheers

Excellent question. The site will be a free service for anyone to sign in and use.

My vision is not about the money its about the value people will get out of using the site and what it will be able to do for people.

But this whole thought of "if the site gets big you're going to need more servers" has crossed my mind and more servers does equal money so the equation is this, if lots of people are using the site and traffic applies pressure on said servers, then my guess is i will have to find a way to earn some kind of crust to allow me to keep the dream alive so to speak.

So really i guess there are two components to this, the immediate and long term plan is to just tell people about it so they can try it out and have fun with it and just enjoy the site, the second is to ensure if it does get big that a long term plan is in place to generate revenue to allow me to have the site keep going.

This of course leads me to more thoughts and that is that I think you find that it wont just be able needing the server space in the future, or the funds to pay for it, but the size of the user base will probably mean I will need people "other than just me" to help me out in coding and improving the sites functionality and user interactivity.

So short answer to that is:

Yes some money to keep it going if and when it gets big to keep servers going would be nice
And also, but more importantly "at this stage of its birth and initial growth" I just "wanna tell as many people as I can about it and share it with everyone as much as I can"

ok.
so what im hearing is ....
goal no 1 is to promote and gauge interest. receive feedback from users on features etc . goal 2 keep the thing up and running and engage the community for the skills do so (i love the opensource community)
goal 3. somes ort of funding model to enable the growth (assumes success ful growth)
goal 4. make gazilions and retire Wink

i have done quite a bit of research into successful funding models (probably shoulda spent my time building my site but anyway)
There is no harm in considering them now...they are not income, but ways to off sets costs.

For example, the non intrusive "buy me a coffee" paypal donation thing is cool. its not in your face and all of my online gaming buddies always buy the coffee if we like the site.

other things going forward is "pay a small subscription to have no adds"....i like to have the first three months of site use as add free. that way the person can fully become involved and attached and are not put off by adds. (im always put off by adds!!!)

at the end of the day, if they like, they will bring business anyway. then at the end of the three months, some non intrusive google ads. are on the site.but you can pay a nominal amount monthly by paypal to get rid of them. for me i generally will pay up to 15.99 US for that.
this business model is many many small subscriptions.

i personally dont like the whole afiliative link model idea so i havent really researched that.
anyone else got details on it for groovy

Interesting models, I think I have to be really careful here...I don't want to go too nuts with the pay us money to get rid of the annoyance thing, ideally I'd like the userbase to use the site for free regardless, the more users who use it openly and freely, the better chances I might have of that in turn enable the website to spread more.

I think unfortunately though, ads will be the source of revenue to keep the site going, I just need to make sure there is a modest balance to this, I don't want to whore the site out and turn it into some grotesque casino vegas horror from hell.

The google ad idea sounds like it might be worth a shot, though I think for that to really work there really has to be some traffic moving on the site and the problem with that is if no one clicks on the ads, I don't score anything from it.

Would I be game enough to source my own 'throw your ad up and pay me' system

Much food for thought indeed

Shocked

Google ads is a good, cheap, easy way to raise funds without knowing a lot about marketing and advertisement. I have google ads on my own site noramifications(dot)com and I have tried to place it in an unobtrusive way, so the ad is almost a part of the site itself.

People don't need to click to make money, google does it by views, and clicks are just an extra bonus, to my knowledge thus far it is something like $0.01 per view and $0.11 per click, if the site takes off even moderately succesfully and you can have a constant 10,000 views per day, thats $700 per week to put towards servers, staff and development, and thats based of having just 1 ad that would be no larger than what I have on my own site current.

I know it's nice to change the world and offer a genuine free service and not be focused on the money, but unfortunately someone, somewhere, has to pay for something, even if it is free.

This is true, about needing to pay for the expansion should it be required. Food for thought anyway.

What I do know is at the moment I am going to have to work with what I have to try and spread the word when it's ready to get as many users in on the site as I can.

If you build it they will um.......uh.....line? scratch
